I never wanted to be a soldier and opposed US involvement in Vietnam, but in 1968, Uncle Sam caught me in a draft. Although I earned a medal for bravery, my memoir is not the work of a wannabe hero. Many books glorify and romanticize soldiering and combat, but mine is not among their ranks. I struggled at enduring the physical and mental hardships of the infantry. My anecdotes about the day to day grind of living outdoors in a harsh environment, often left out in books about war, are fascinating and often humorous. The dark and painful side of my journey includes my killing a teenage boy and later observing an infant die. In addition, uncivil and cruel treatment of Vietnamese civilians by some of my fellow soldiers and our company captain poses ethical dilemmas and raises disquieting questions. Overall, my stories will arouse emotion, provoke thought, and sometimes challenge presuppositions. Scattered throughout my memoir are excerpts from letters I sent home to family during my service.

I was dreading reading this book. How misguided my concerns were! I simply could not put it down! Here were my ill-founded misgivings: 1) That this book — which started as a therapy project for the author’s PTSD —would not be interesting to someone who was not on that journey; 2) That I would be forced to choose one of two miserable choices: first, not to write a review at all on the grounds that if I couldn’t say something nice, to say nothing at all OR second, to write an honest, possibly critical and unflattering review and thereby lose a friend. The author is a friend of my husband’s and mine of over 35 years. Also, I am an aficionado of military memoirs, as well as military history and military strategy. Siegfried Sassoon’s “Memoirs of an Infantry Officer” and Robert Graves’ “Goodbye to All That” are my favorites of this genre. The author’s account holds up extremely well in this context. Not only does he cover his specific subject matter very well, he includes the concurrent culture of the era, as well as the political context. We are in his shoes all the way: from the initial draft notice;, his family’s anguish; basic training; the chilling assignment to combat in the infantry; the conditions during combat including particularly gut wrenching casualties and exposure to the elements and napalm; injuries and R&R; the ride home on the “Freedom Bird” and the struggle to overcome his PTSD. With his artist’s eye we read about the beauty of much of the landscape, the flora and fauna and the people of Vietnam. We learn about his exposure to his fellow Americans from different backgrounds who have been drafted just like he was. He includes his foibles and mistakes. He describes the reception back home and how he sees his homeland through new eyes, appreciating many people and sights even more. We hurt for him, we laugh with him, we cheer him on and we learn a great deal about how this tragic conflict has affected all of us.It’s a great read. Thanks, Bob, for making this effort. It’s a gift to us all.
