The author, Lynne M. Black was a U.S. Army special operator during the Vietnam war. The book derives from his personal experiences on now declassified missions run by small teams of Green Berets working with indigenous people in Laos, Cambodia, and North Vietnam. These teams were inserted by helicopter often dropped on ropes into triple canopy jungle many miles from friendly forces to surveil and disrupt enemy movement along the Ho Chi Minh trail. Lynne M. Black provides a vivid account of his entire experience, the training, R&R, combat, and comand abuse that these teams experienced dealing with an enemy that often outnumbered the teams ten to one.That it needs a little polish is at times obvious, but even where parts of the book represent a composite of his experiences from more than one mission, it rings true. That is to say, It reads as the experience of the author writing about what he knows and remembers well. It is an authentic account of history that may otherwise have been forever lost. The title was a good choice and is appropriate considering the experience of the Green Berets as a “silent professionals” and the way they were treated during this part of American history. This is a book that would make a good movie. I found it to be a thoroughly enjoyable read.I hope the book's title will in no way be diminished by the recently released movie staring Tina Faye., which is a comedy, and silly, in a setting completely unrelated to the Vietnam war or America's secret war in Laos and Cambodia.If you find this review helpful, hit the “helpful” button below to Let me know that I did not waste my time reviewing this product and make me more inclined to review other products.
